Trades – Handyman: Kaleb Savage – Savage Handyman

Kaleb Savage

Trades - Handyman

Summary: Handyman Kaleb Savage of Park City, UT knows the value of and how to leverage a professional networking group. You'll hear how this year $120,000 of business came as referrals from his BNI chapter, that's 60% of his total business! He talks about how other members of his chapter work together, like the electrician, the painter, the interior decorator, the roofer. Once one member gets a job, they refer each other to all their client. He's six weeks out on appointments, but no matter how busy he gets, no way would he consider not being apart of BNI.

Laura Viskovich: Welcome to the Professional Business Connections. I’m Laura Viskovich, and I’m really excited to introduce you today to Kaleb Savage. Savage Handyman is your business and what a great name. Welcome to the show.

Kaleb Savage: Thank you.

Laura Viskovich: So before we get into the business side of things, how did you become the handyman?

Kaleb Savage: I started – I was waiting tables and then I started working for an electrician. He can only keep me busy part time, so I also worked for a general contractor part time. They ended up fighting over me. So I took the easier job which was electrician, and then I quit working for him to learn more about construction, worked for the contractor and decided just to start my company.

LAURA VISKOVICH: Then –

Kaleb Savage: So I started out with a lot of dry wall batches and then I just went from there.

Laura Viskovich: Wonderful. Now I know that you have some people working in your business now, so how do you generate business into what it is that you do now?

Kaleb Savage: Well, I hired my dad two and a half years ago he’s moving back from California. I was swamped already and I didn’t need more business but just to make sure, I had heard about a group called BNI.

Laura Viskovich: Right.

Kaleb Savage: So I went, and I visited the chapter. Before I even joined, I made about $8,000 just in referrals, just from visiting the chapter.

Laura Viskovich: Wow.

Kaleb Savage: Because they didn’t have a handyman and everybody needs a handyman.

Laura Viskovich: Yeah, fantastic. So you visited, you got business before you joined and then you joined. Now, how long have you been in BNI for?

Kaleb Savage: I signed for my third year couple months ago.

Laura Viskovich: Okay, great. So walk us through what year one and year two has done, dollar sign or percentage.

Kaleb Savage: Dollar sign or percentage, it’s about a $120,000 a year, which is about 60% –

Laura Viskovich: Wow.

Kaleb Savage: – of my business.

Laura Viskovich: Fantastic. So your dad’s still in your business?

Kaleb Savage: Yes.

Laura Viskovich: That’s good. Fantastic. So what’s the secret sauce do you think? Why is it so successful?

Kaleb Savage: I think my personality people like. I waited tables for 17 years in a restaurant. I was always top sales. I can sell anything that anybody – people just – people like me, my dad and my brother are my two employees and they’re likeable as well, I mean we go to somebody’s house and before you know it, they’re offering us beers, you know.

Laura Viskovich: Fantastic. So you’ve built the rapport, so you go every week, and everyone sees you, visibility, you built those relationships and they refer you business.

Kaleb Savage: Yes.

Laura Viskovich: So, that’s fantastic. The philosophy givers gain is – it’s an incredible one, isn’t it?

Kaleb Savage: Yeah.

Laura Viskovich: Now, you had an incredible experience visiting BNI as a visitor, for anyone out there who’s looking to visit a chapter, what would your tip and trick be?

Kaleb Savage: BNI works especially for me. I'm busy, I go to a job and people want me to do electrical and roofing, and countertops, and tile, and I'm like, you know what, it’s – for me it’s so nice to have BNI just because I have all these other different contractors that I can actually give work to, which for me, is awesome.

Laura Viskovich: Great.

Kaleb Savage: Because I get way too much. And then in return, I get 10 times full.

Laura Viskovich: Fantastic. So I hear that your building these referrals sort of relationships, so if – is there someone in your chapter that’s not in your chapter, that you would love to be in your chapter, to build those referral relationships?

Kaleb Savage: We need a tile guy.

Laura Viskovich: Tile guy? Right [Laughs]

Kaleb Savage: I don’t like to do tiles so.

Laura Viskovich: No?

Kaleb Savage: But I can. I just don’t like it.

Laura Viskovich: So then you would refer that business off?

Kaleb Savage: Yes.

Laura Viskovich: Fantastic. I love the concept. Okay, great. Well, is there any amazing referral that’s happened to you in your business that has kind of changed the course?

Kaleb Savage: You know, many times I show up to a job and a lot of times I don’t even know where my work is coming from, people just call me. And then I show up to the job and I see our countertop guy, I’d see our painter, I’d see our electrician, I see our roofer, I see our interior designer. Once one of us gets a hold of the job, we pass it around the whole room. And that’s just how it works, you know, and when you get to a job and they’re like, “Oh, yeah, you were referred by five different people.”

Laura Viskovich: Wow.

Kaleb Savage: People will – they will call me and I’ll say, “I’m a month and a half out.” And they say, “You come highly – so highly recommended that – put me on your schedule. I’ll wait.

Laura Viskovich: Fantastic.

Kaleb Savage: So, it’s great.

Laura Viskovich: I can really see the power in those referral relationships. So thank you so much for coming on the show and sharing your journey. Now, that’s the professional business connections and I’ll see you on the next show.
